  • Breathe Easy with these HVAC Tips

Breathe Easy with these HVAC Tips

Summer heat is gone, and cool fall weather is here but that doesn’t mean your HVAC system will be taking a break. To ensure your HVAC system is at it’s very best this heating season consider the following tips a great place to start.

Check and change filters. This is important for a couple reasons: One, it keeps the air in your home free of large airborne particles such as dirt, dust, hair and more. Two, a clean filter allows the HVAC system to operate smoothly - dirty filters cause air restriction that can damage equipment and can potentially cause a system to shut down, which usually happens when weather is extreme. Breathe easy with a fresh filter.

Check and clean registers and grilles. Like a filter, register and return grilles collect airborne particles. Over time excessive buildup can lead to a drop in air quality and may restrict air flow through your home. To clean, simply remove the register or grille from its mounted position, and wipe down with a rag, warm water or mild cleaner. Note: if a cleaner that leaves behind residues is used, it could cause additional particle buildup so to be sure to thoroughly clean and dry.

Pre-season maintenance. This is vitally important, especially with equipment that is old. As we move into the colder months our furnace becomes the most important piece of equipment in the home. Furnaces that are not maintained regularly (once a year) regardless of age tend to fail on the coldest days, holidays, and for any number of reasons. The furnace in your home needs to start and run every day, give it the TLC deserved so you’re not left freezing.

Replace aging equipment. HVAC equipment (furnace, AC, evaporator coil) that is beyond its service life becomes inefficient, costs more to operate, and may become a safety concern should there be a cracked heat exchanger in your furnace as an example. When it comes down to replacement, you’ll typically work with a Comfort Advisor. These individuals are up to date on current rebates and will help you narrow down equipment options for your home, comfort preferences and needs.

Install a programmable smart thermostat. This is one of the best things to do for your HVAC system. There are many features on smart thermostats that enhance homeowner’s connection with and control of their HVAC system. Features such as geofencing allow a system to adjust its operation when you leave a certain radius from home and Wi-Fi access lets you monitor temperatures when out of town or at work - important during cold months when pipes can burst if there is no heat. Brands to consider for smart thermostats are Ecobee and Honeywell.
