  • Registered Vascular Technician (RVT)/ Licensed Ultrasound Sonographer

    General Summary of Duties. The Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) works in tandem with Dr. Kevin Kern to evaluate venous disease while using a variety of ultrasound modalities, including gray scale, Doppler, and color-duplex imaging.
     
    Required Attitude. Make sure that all patients who come to the office are made to feel welcome and comfortable. Work as part of the clinical care team with Dr. Kern and the office staff.
     
    Responsibilities Include …
    1.Perform patient evaluation and assessment of vein disease prior to ultrasound examination. For internal marketing efforts, please ask each patient how they heard about the practice and confirm that the scheduling coordinator has documented this information in the EMR.  
    2.Perform ultrasound examination of patients’ superficial and deep veins to create a venous flow map for purposes of recommending a safe and effective treatment plan (based on accepted imaging protocol). 
    3.Finish all ultrasound reports within 24 hours for Dr. Kern’s signature. 
    4.Immediately notify Dr. Kern of urgent findings, including, but not limited to acute DVT, superficial phlebitis, and complications from treatment. 
    5.Assist Dr. Kern in explaining the treatment plan to the patient and how that treatment plan addresses the patient’s specific needs. 
    6.Assist Dr. Kern during venous treatment procedures (i.e., EVLT, RF, Venaseal, Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS), and Varithena) with appropriate visualization regarding catheter / needle placement and withdrawal.  
    7.Responsible for pre-treatment set up and post-procedure cleaning of the treatment room. 
    8.Responsible for adhering to safety standards set forth by OSHA. 
    9.Perform any additional ultrasound exams as indicated by the treatment plan at the direction of Physician to ensure the efficacy of treatment and safety of the patients. 
    10.Assist Dr. Kern and office staff in establishing and maintaining the ultrasound schedule to ensure optimum patient care, efficiency, and safety. 
    11.Develop and maintain a high level of diagnostic clinical skills commensurate with the standards set by Dr. Kern. 
    12.Maintain ultrasound equipment and manage supply inventory to ensure effective clinical operations.  
    13.Verify completion of all consent forms prior to starting a procedure. 

    Experience & Educational Requirements. Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT). Certificate of Completion from an accredited (CAAHEP) ultrasound program preferred. Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
     
    Optional. Experience with IAC accreditation and continued quality assurance programs.
     
    Knowledge
    1.Knowledge of vascular disease.
    2.Knowledge of various treatment options for varicose and spider veins.
    3.Knowledge of common safety procedures and precautions to establish / maintain an OSHA compliant safe work environment. 

    Skills
    1.Skill in exercising high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and day-to-day decision-making.
    2.Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. 

    Abilities
    1.Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
    2.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
    3.Ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality.
    4.Ability to set priorities among multiple requests.
    5.Ability to maintain quality control standards.
    6.Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. 

    Continuing Education.  Stay informed regarding new treatments, technologies, and medications relating to venous disease and vein care. Attend continuing education programs to learn more about the latest techniques / medications and how they will help the patients that utilize this technique / medication.
