One Book, One Batavia 2017 celebrates resilience and remembrance
Born Survivors: Three Young Mothers and their Extraordinary Story of Courage, Defiance, and Hope, by Wendy Holden, is the One Book, One Batavia 2017 selection.
Published in 2015, Born Survivors recounts how three young women—Priska, Rachel, and Anka—newly pregnant, were sent to Nazi concentration camps; were separated from their husbands; endured starvation, illness, and punishments; and hid their pregnancies and childbirth from the Nazis. Born Survivors has been published in 21 countries and translated into 16 languages.
At 2 p.m. on March 19, the library will host “The Gift and the Curse,” featuring Karen Berk Barak, award-winning pianist and composer. Barak’s multimedia presentation illustrates her personal story growing up as the daughter of Holocaust survivors. This uplifting and heart-warming performance explores how Barak used her musical artistry to transform a legacy of loss, sending a powerful message of resilience and remembrance.
Registration is required. To register, visit OneBookOneBatavia.org, or call the library Reference Desk, (630) 879-1393, ext. 200.
Born Survivors is the 15th book to be celebrated by the library during its annual community-wide reading event. One Book, One Batavia is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Batavia Public Library
